Paul Robeson Freedom School was founded in 2012 by Rodney Deas, also known as The Real Radio Rahim, and co-founder Justin Wedes, during the vibrant Occupy Wall Street movement in NYC. The Paul Robeson Freedom School is a transformative educational initiative that champions the potential of youth through comprehensive learning and community engagement. Our freedom school was named in honor of the man himself; Paul Robeson; a talented musician, cultural icon, and an advocate for social justice and in honor of New York's Paul Robeson High School students who advocated for change in their education experience, leading to the school's closing.
We, at Paul Robeson Freedom School, believe that every young person deserves access to quality education, mentorship, and a supportive community. In a world where systemic barriers continue to challenge marginalized youth, the Paul Robeson Freedom School stands as a beacon of hope, fostering empowerment and inspiring positive change. Our goal is to cultivate future leaders who will impact their communities and the world through creativity, knowledge, and a commitment to social justice.
We offer a diverse range of programs tailored to equip youth between the ages of 12-18 with essential life skills and knowledge necessary for success in the 21st century while uplifting and inspire diverse communities. Our initiatives include: Life Skills Training, Mentoring Programs, After-School Tutoring, Educational Field Trips, Hands-On Learning Experiences, Community Action Plans, Reading and Writing Tutoring, Communication Skills Training, Gardening, Physical and Mental Health Education, Nutrition, African American Studies, Computing, Media Literacy, Civics and Creative Expression through Music Creation, Songwriting, Smartphone Filmmaking, and Photography.
Our approach is rooted in collaborative learning and community engagement, where youth are at the center of everything we do. Through hands-on activities, educational programs and mentorship, we create an inclusive environment where every participant feels valued and empowered to express themselves. Our dedicated team of educators, community leaders, and volunteers work together to ensure that each program is interactive, relevant, and rooted in the principles of social justice.
